Churches can only offer $29M for Native abuse

A group of Catholic churches say they can only offer $29 million to Native victims of residential school abuse.

The Catholic churches say they don't have any more money or a way to generate more money. They say they can pay the $29 million over five years.

Catholic, Anglican and United Church groups ran residential schools on behalf of the Canadian government. Canada's Supreme Court ruled last month that the churches share liability with the government for any abuse that may have occurred. The court put 75 percent on Canada and 25 percent on the churches.
