Jail on reservation set to open after upgrades

A jail on the Yakama Nation in Washington is set to reopen after making improvements following a suicide and an attempted suicide.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs closed the jail in January 2005, citing safety hazards. The move came after an adult hanged himself and a 17-year-old boy attempted to hang himself three months later.

The tribe has installed new equipment and made repairs with the help of a $450,000 grant from the Department of Justice. Some procedural changes were also made.

The jail was ordered not to house juveniles after the incident with the boy.
