Racism an issue after beatings in border town
Friday, January 12, 2007

The beatings of three Navajo men have prompted concerns about racism in the border town of Cortez, Colorado.

The attacks occurred in a city park last November and one man had to be hospitalized. No one has come forward with information about the assailants despite a $2,000 reward.

In response to the incident, the Southwest Intertribal Voice organized a meeting to discuss racial issues. Indian and non-Indian residents and law enforcement authorities attended.

Cortez is located near the Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation and the Southern Ute Reservation.
