Little Shell Chippewa Tribe to receive state site

The Little Shell Chippewa Tribe of Montana will control a state office building for the next 10 years under a bill signed into law by Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D).
Schweitzer signed the bill into law in early April but held another signing to include tribal leaders. He said the tribe deserves federal recognition.
Under the law, the tribe will control a historic building, along with several acres, at the Morony damsite. The site is currently managed by the Fish, Wildlife & Parks department.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs issued a proposed finding in favor of the tribe back in May 2000. A final determination has not been made by the Bush administration.
