Colorado county, city oppose Navajo power plant

Opposition to the Navajo Nation's proposed power plant in New Mexico is coming from Colorado.

The La Plata County Commissioners passed a resolution 4-0 to ask the Bureau of Indian Affairs to support the "no action" alternative on the draft environmental impact statement for the project. The no action alternative means the power plant won't be constructed.

The city of Durango passed a similar resolution 4-0. But the mayor abstained, saying the vote exceeded the city's jurisdiction.

The tribe wants to build a 1,500-megawatt $2.5 billion power plant near Shiprock. Navajo environmentalists and tribal members who live near the site oppose the project.
