A court-appointed lawyer who is overseeing a troubled trailer park on the Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Reservation in California says he is amazed by conditions there.
Mark Adams is the temporary receiver for the Desert Mobile Home Park, also known as Duroville. His job is to make emergency repairs to water, electricity and sewage systems at the site.
"I have cleaned up slums all over California but have taken on nothing as daunting as Duroville," Adams told The Los Angeles Times. "The magnitude of this is amazing."
Upwards of 6,000 people live at the park. Most of them are migrant Hispanic workers and Indians from Mexico.
The park is owned by Harvey Duro, a tribal council member. The Bureau of Indian Affairs says he has failed to improve living conditions despite repeated warnings.
