Indian woman competes in Ms. Wheelchair America
Thursday, July 24, 2008

Elizabeth Reeve, a Cherokee-Delaware woman from Oklahoma, is competing for the Ms. Wheelchair America title this week.

Reeve lost her ability to walk due to a spinal cord injury and other medical issues. She credits the Cherokee Nation's Vocational Rehabilitation Project with helping her get back on track.

“Cherokee Nation’s Voc Rehab has taught me to become more of an advocate for myself and enabled me to begin a new career path," Reeve said in a press release. "I feel like I can be more of an assistant to the community now and the program has given me life skills that I might not have had.”

The competition takes place this week in Rockville, Maryland. If Reeve wins, she would be the second Native woman to claim the title -- Cinda Hughes, a member of the Kiowa Tribe of Oklahoma, served in 2004..
