Tensions continue between Soboba Band and sheriff

The Soboba Band of Luiseno Indians will continue to monitor deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff's Department who enter the reservation.

Chairman Robert Salgado said the tribe has a right to know who is coming on the reservation. He said the deputies will be allowed to respond to emergencies.

“This isn't the 1800s when the Calvary came,” Salgado said at a news conference.

Sheriff's deputies have shot and killed five tribal members in recent months. Three deaths occurred less than a week apart in May.

California falls under Public Law 280 so the county claims it can enter the reservation at any times.
