Navajo Nation fears loss of Internet service
Friday, August 1, 2008

The Navajo Nation is lobbying Congress to prevent the loss of Internet service on the tri-state reservation.

Most of the tribe's 110 chapters, along with some government programs, receive Internet service from a Utah company called Universal Service Administration Co. OnSat in turn depends on funding from the Universal Service Administrative Co., an arm of the Federal Communications Commission.

USAC, however, has withheld $2.1 million from OnSat because a tribal audit questioned the company's billing practices. OnSat said it can't provide service to the reservation without the federal funds.

The tribe is blaming the USAC for "mishandling" the matter. Members of Congress are pressing the FCC to take action to prevent a loss of critical services.
