The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has spent $185,000 to support a candidate for the California Board of Equalization, Capitol Weekly reports.

The tribe started an independent expenditure campaign that has paid for mailers and "robocalls" in favor of Barbara Alby, a Republican. If elected, she would help set tax policy for the state.

"The California Board of Equalization is responsible for making public policy decisions as they relate to tax administration -- an especially complex issue as it relates to Indian Tribes who are sovereign governments,” tribal spokesperson Jacob Coin told the paper.

Tribes have spent money on other candidates for the board, which has gone against tribal interests in at least two recent federal court cases.
