Appeals delay distribution of $3.4B settlement to Cobell case

Appeals are expected to delay distribution of the $3.4 billion settlement to the Indian trust fund lawsuit.

Kimberly Craven, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, has been a vocal critic of the $3.4 billion settlement to the case. She filed a notice to appeal but her attorney says she's willing to "expedite" the process.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs have said the money could go out by Christmas without an appeal. They are asking Craven and other objectors to submit an $8.3 million to cover interest, fees and other costs associated with a delay.

Another notice of appeal was filed by the Harvest Institute Freedmen Federation. The group is representing two Freedmen descendants.
