Senate panel approves Keith Harper nomination for UN post

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday approved the nomination of Keith Harper, a member of the Cherokee Nation, to serve in an ambassador-rank post.

President Barack Obama nominated Harper to serve as the United States Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council. If confirmed, Harper will the first member of a federally-recognized tribe in an ambassador-rank post.

Harper's nomination can now go to the full Senate.
