The Coeur d'Alene Tribe of Idaho is eager to benefit from the Land Buy-Back Program for Tribal Nations.

The tribe wants to consolidate fractionated allotments on the reservation. Due to lack of wills and other management issues, some parcels have 20 or more owners.

“It ends up sitting idle," spokesperson Heather Keen The Spokesman-Review, referring to one of the problems caused by fractionation.

Tribal members will see a total of $4.1 million if they accept offers from the Interior Department. Appraisals should be done by August 1, Keen said, and then offers can go out.

The Cobell settlement provided $1.9 billion for Indian landowners who want to sell their fractionated interests. DOI will pay "fair market value" as required by the Indian Land Consolidation Act.
