Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-California) introduced a bill to place 1,400 acres in trust for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California.

The tribe filed a land-into-trust application with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the site. Local opponents are putting up a big fight so passage of H.R.1157 would overcome those hurdles.

"We thank Congressman LaMalfa and the cosponsors for their leadership in helping bring attention to the importance of tribal sovereignty and self-determination, not only for our tribe but for all Native Americans who are working toward restoring their ancestral lands,” Chairman Vincent Armenta said in a statement, The Lompoc Record reported. “We look forward to working with Congress to ensure the passage of this important legislation.”

The tribe plans to use the land for housing. The BIA has released an environmental assessment on the acquisition.
