Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe offers tours of marijuana facility

McClatchy DC published a photo of Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe President Tony Reider inside a medical marijuana grow facility in Arizona. The photo was provided by Reider.

The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe is offering tours of its marijuana operation to officials in South Dakota.

The tribe invited Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R) and state lawmakers to the reservation on October 16. Attorney Seth Pearman told KELO that some officials have already agreed to come.

The tribe is growing marijuana at a facility on the reservation and will sell the drug at another. The operation is expected to open by the end of December.

The Department of Justice opened the door to legal marijuana in Indian Country with the 2014 Wilkinson memo. The tribe voted 5-1 in June to legalize marijuana and approved a comprehensive set of laws and policies to address the sale and use of the drug.

Attorney General Marty Jackley, however, has vowed to prosecute non-Indians who use the drug on the reservation.
