Navajo Republicans divided on Donald Trump's 'Pocahontas' slur

As leaders of the Navajo Nation seek a meeting with Donald Trump, two Republicans from the tribe are divided on the presidential candidate's attacks on Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts).

Trump, who is set to claim his party's nomination next month, has repeatedly referred to Warren as "Pocahontas" and has derided her claims of Indian ancestry. Carlyle W. Begay, a Republican candidate for Congress, told The New York Times that he did not support the use as the slur.

“The term that he used should be changed,” Begay told the paper. “He should use a different rhetoric, and this is an opportunity to help him understand that.”

But Shawn Redd, another Navajo Republican candidate, supported Trump's missives. Warren has never provided documentation of her heritage, other than to say she grew up in Oklahoma hearing stories of her Cherokee ancestry.

“I think Donald Trump is within his full rights to make fun of her for it,” . Redd told the Times. “It is a scandal.”

Trump is set to visit Arizona this weekend but a meeting with Navajo leaders hasn't been confirmed, the Times reported.
