Sen. Warren stands up to Donald Trump despite his 'Indian' insults

Republicans who criticized presidential candidate Donald Trump didn't last very long after finding themselves on the losing end of the real estate mogul's nasty attacks.

But now that Trump is poised to claim his party's nomination, a Democrat who isn't even in the race has turned out to be one of his biggest foes. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) has repeatedly ripped into the candidate despite his attempts to revive a race-related controversy that arose during her campaign for the Senate in 2012.

"Goofy Elizabeth Warren is weak and ineffective. Does nothing. All talk, no action -- maybe her Native American name?" Trump wrote on Twitter last week.

Warren, who was born and raised in Oklahoma, identified herself as Native American and, more specifically, as Cherokee during her law school career. Although she has never provided documentation of her heritage, voters in Massachusetts didn't seem to care when her opponent at the time ridiculed her for making those claims.

Trump, though, has brought the issue up more than once in response to Warren's critiques. After she called him a "loser" and a "serious threat" due to his comments about women and ethnic minorities, he referred to her as "the Indian" in comments to reporters and a columnist in March.

When it became clear last week that Trump was going to secure the GOP nod, Warren said she would do whatever it takes to prevent his "toxic stew of hatred & insecurity" from reaching the White House. She also sounded a warning about the use of stereotypes and slurs.

"We saw when Scott Brown attacked my family & his staff made tomahawk chops & war whoops. They lost big. MA voters knew better," Warren wrote on Twitter on May 6. She defeated Republican Scott Brown in 2012.
