Pombo to hold hearing on BIA-OST reorganization
Friday, May 7, 2004
The House Resources Committee is expected to hold an oversight hearing on the reorganization of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Office of Special Trustee next week.
Rep. Richard Pombo (R-California), chairman of the committee, has been asked by tribal leaders to hold the hearing, currently scheduled for May 12. The witness list has not been determined.
The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a similar hearing on March 11, when Bush administration officials defended the reorganization amid tribal criticism. Tribes say the changes will not address key trust reform issues at the reservation level, including limited funding and inadequate staff.
