Indian energy title up for debate in Senate
Monday, July 28, 2003

Senate Democrats don't think the chamber can pass a massive energy bill by the end of the week but Republicans are going to try.

A vote on the Indian title of the bill could come up today. Some tribes and the Navajo Nation are opposing provisions that would limit the Department of Interior's involvement in approval of energy resources leases.

Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.) is set to offer an amendment that would make some changes to the current version. David Lester, executive director of the Council of Energy Resource Tribes, told The Denver Post that the new language resolves concerns about the federal government's trust responsibilities.
