Headstones for Athabaskan leaders dedicated
Thursday, August 7, 2003

Headstones to three Dena'ina Athabaskan chiefs who died in the 1900s were dedicated at a ceremony on Wednesday.

The headstones mark the graves of Chief Nicholai I, who died in 1919, and Chief Nicholai II and Chief Simeon Ezi, who died in 1935. All three are buried in a cemetery in Anchorage.

The headstones are considered replacements of sorts for spirit houses that once marked the gravesites. But elders said it would be inappropriate to recreate those.
