Navajo Nation president working with Peabody
Wednesday, August 13, 2003

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. is working with Peabody Coal to try and keep a mine on the reservation in operation.

Shirley criticized the Navajo Nation council for passing a resolution opposing Peabody's use of a particular water source. He said he wants to find an alternative source that will keep the mine open and save more than 700 jobs.

Peabody is the defendant in litigation with the tribe, accused of colluding with federal officials to deny the tribe its rightful royalty rate. The case is pending before the federal district court in Washington, D.C. The tribe claims it lost at least $600 million because of the deal.
