Quapaw Tribe to sue mining companies for cleanup

The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma plans to file a suit against mining companies whose leftover waste created the largest Superfund site in the country, The Joplin Globe reports.

The tribe plans to ask for monetary compensation for tribal members and to clean up the waste, also known as chat. Some 70 million tons of chat sit on Quapaw tribal lands, posing a health hazard.

The tribe has a separate lawsuit against the Department of Interior for alleged mismanagement of tribal trust funds.
