Yellow Bird: Owning a home becomes more difficult
Tuesday, August 26, 2003

"When I read the Herald's special project about housing, "The American Dream" , I thought how things have changed for homeowners in the past 20 years. For young people today, owning a home is on the top shelf - and you need to stand on tiptoe and stretch to reach it. When I was young, we started our house-buying escapades because we learned it was good for our family budget. That lesson turned out well for us: We generally had enough equity in the house we sold to make the down payment on the next one. The mortgage helped on our income taxes and we always had a good-sized house with a yard."
