Penobscot Nation wanted paper mill on Superfund list
Thursday, August 28, 2003

The Penobscot Nation of Maine says a decision not to put an old paper mill on the Superfund list is political.

The Environmental Protection Agency announced on Friday it would not add the Lincoln Pulp & Paper Co. site to the list. Maine officials had opposed a listing.

The tribe has been fighting paper companies over pollution in the Penobscot River. The EPA is still trying to decide whether the tribe, and not the state, can regulate water quality on reservation.
