Research questions arrival of Indian ancestors
Friday, July 25, 2003

Research to be published in the American Journal of Human Genetics suggests that Indian ancestors arrived to the Americans no earlier than 18,000 years ago, The New York Times reports.

Scientists compared the DNA of American Indians and Siberians. They say changes observed in the Indian DNA occurred 15,000 to 18,000 years ago, contradicting other theories that Indian ancestors migrated as far back as 30,000 years ago.

The Times does not report which American Indian or Siberian populations were studied. The study implies that all American Indians are descended from the same ancestral group as Siberians.

Another study published in the journal Science also relates to the issue. Scientists say a site in Siberia, which they believed was the "way station" for migration into the Americas, is not at old as they thought.
