Ariz. governor meets with tribes for housing summit
Wednesday, September 3, 2003

Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano (D) met with tribal leaders on Tuesday to discuss housing issues on reservations.

Tribes said they are unable to provide enough quality housing for residents. Tohono O'odham Nation Chairwoman Vivian Juan-Saunders said the tribe only gets $6 million in federal funds a year but has a waiting list of 700.

Napolitano said the state cannot provide financial assistance but can help in other ways. Tribes welcomed her attention, considered unprecedented for a governor for the state.
