Mining company wants BLM to buy sacred Mont. hills
Wednesday, September 3, 2003

A mining company wants the Bureau of Land Management to buy the sacred Sweet Grass Hills in Montana and have it managed as a state park.

Mount Royal Joint Venture won't say how much it wants for the 900-acre site considered sacred to the Blackfeet, Chippewa, Cree, Assiniboine and other tribes. But the company says it should be compensated for gold and silver it says are in the hills.

The Sweetgrass Hills Protective Association says the company is asking for $25 million, an "almost laughable" sum. The group represents Indians and non-Indians who want the area protected.

The BLM has imposed new mining claims in an area including the hills until 2017.
