Federal judge throws out tribal court settlement
Thursday, September 11, 2003

A federal judge in New Mexico has thrown out a $4 million settlement made in Zuni tribal court, The Gallup Independent reports.

The tribal court asserted jurisdiction over a sexual harassment case involving a teacher. The teacher worked at a public school on the reservation and allegedly admitted to improper relations with a student who was 16 at the time.

The public school system challenged the $4 million settlement and tribal court jurisdiction.
