Senate committee to hold hearing on EPA nominee
Tuesday, September 23, 2003

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee opens hearings today on the nomination of Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt (R) to head the Environmental Protection Agency.

Leavitt has promoted a concept he calls "enlibra." He says he works with all parties to solve problems but environmentalists and some Democrats dispute whether he has been true to his policy, noting that he made deals, without public notice, with the Bush administration affecting millions of acres of land.

Leavitt has not been willing to negotiate over a proposed nuclear waste dump on the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation. The tribe wants to use the project for economic development but Leavitt's response has been to say "over my dead body."

Today's hearing starts at 9 a.m. A live audio link can be found at http://epw.senate.gov/audio-visual_media_108.htm or http://www.capitolhearings.org.
