Tribes market bison herds to federal government
Monday, September 29, 2003

Tribes with bison herds are finding a customer in the federal government.

Tribes are beginning to provide meat to the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a federal food program. But first they had to convince the agency to change its mindset on suing bison meat from Indian producers.

Money from Congress helped. USDA has dedicated $1 million, out of $3 million appropriated, to help offset the costs of processing and distributing mean from tribal bison herds.

For the Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma, local support nudged USDA into action. The tribe's herd supplies meat for local schools who participate in federal nutrition programs.
