School paper apologizes for 'scalp' headline
Tuesday, September 30, 2003

Two Lakota students at Mesa State College in Colorado say an apology from the school newspaper for its "scalp" headline is not enough.

The Criterion headline "Mavs Scalp Sioux 31-24" accompanied a story about the school football team's victory over the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux. Gayla and Cy Black Horn, who are from the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, say the headline was offensive.

Dr. Morris Brown, the faculty adviser to the paper, and sports editor Austin Brock defended the headline in the paper. But Brown resigned the next day after criticism from students.

Gayla Black Horn sits on the school's Cultural Diversity Board. She said others are accusing her of being too sensitive.
