Lakota reject plans for fossil dig on tribal land
Wednesday, October 1, 2003

Oglala Lakota tribal members who attended a meeting with the National Park Service rejected plans to resume a fossil dig on tribal land within the Badlands National Park.

The land is held in trust for the tribe but managed by NPS under a joint agreement the tribe signed in 1976. Many Lakota want the agreement to end in order to protect the site where their ancestors gathered after the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.
