N.M. breaks ground on Bosque Redondo memorial
Thursday, October 2, 2003

The state of New Mexico broke ground on a memorial to the Navajo Nation and the Mescalero Apache Nation.

The memorial will commemorate the experiences of the two tribes at Bosque Redondo. The Army forced 8,000 Navajos to walk 300 miles to the area in 1863. After the signing of a treaty in 1868, they were forced to walk back to eastern Arizona.

About 400 Mescaleros were also forced to the area but according to historians, they were not treated as badly as the Navajos.
