Pataki says he would consider out-of-state tribes
Wednesday, October 8, 2003

New York Gov. George Pataki (R) has softened his objections to out-of-state tribes seeking to reclaim their roots in the state.

According to The Middletown Times Herald-Record, Pataki yesterday said he would consider negotiating casinos with the tribes. "Our goal is still to have compacts reached with the tribes that are in New York state. If we can do that, that is our preference. If we can't do that, then we will have to take another look," he was quoted as saying.

The Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans of Wisconsin is seeking a casino in the Catskills. The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma is trying to open a bingo hall on ancestral land in the state.
