Study links poverty to mental health of tribe
Wednesday, October 15, 2003

Research being published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association links poverty to psychiatric problems within the Eastern Band of Cherokees of North Carolina.

Over a four-year period, researchers studied families who received the tribe's per capita payments. As the saw their income levels rise above the federal poverty level, the frequency of psychiatric problems in their children decreased.

Adult members of the tribe receive about $6,000 per year. The tribe deposits the money into a trust account for minors under the age of 18.
