Politicians don't want school to seek Indian money
Friday, October 17, 2003

Connecticut Gov. John G. Rowland and state attorney general Richard Blumenthal don't want the dean of the University of Connecticut law school to fund a proposed Indian law center with Bureau of Indian Affairs or tribal funds.

Dean Nell Jessup Newton has asked Rep. Robert Simmons (R) to seek a $2 million appropriation from the BIA's budget. But Rowland and Blumenthal, in separate letter, say the BIA is tainted and would hurt the mission of the law center.

Rowland and Blumenthal are involved in litigation against tribes in the state. So are local leaders in southeastern Connecticut, who also oppose the use of BIA or tribal funds for the law center. They all claim the center would suffer from a conflict of interest.
