Maya elders help authorities recover stolen altar
Thursday, October 30, 2003

Elders from a Maya village helped authorities in the country and other experts track down and recover an altar stolen from an ancient Maya site.

Elders who live near the site first told archaeologists about the 600-pound altar, which dates to the late eighth century. They helped authorities reclaim it after a six-month undercover sting. Four people are going on trial for stealing the altar.

Residents of the village have become involved in the preservation and protection of Cancun, a large Mayan city.
