The Department of Interior didn't suggest legislation to delay a court-ordered accounting of the Indian trust but supports the rider anyway, a top official said on Wednesday.

"It gives us a time-out for everybody to go wrestle the issue to the ground," associate deputy secretary Jim Cason told The Oklahoman.

Cason was a witness at a Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on a bill to resolve the Indian trust fund case. He said the legislation, introduced by Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), does not resolve the accounting issue.

The Native American Rights Fund (NARF), the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and the Osage Nation of Oklahoma also voiced complaints.
