House committee holding field hearing on trust fund
Monday, November 3, 2003
The House Resources Committee is holding a field hearing on the Indian trust fund lawsuit today.
Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Calif.) has called several hearings to consider legislative settlement of the Cobell v. Norton case. He has been leading efforts to prevent Congressional appropriators from undermining the rights of Indian account holders.
Today's hearing will be chaired by Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.), the co-chair of the Congressional Native American Caucus.
It is being held at the Lehi Community Center on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Reservation in Arizona.
"I commend Congressman Hayworth for his leadership on this issue," Pombo said in a statement on Friday. "It is clearly time to begin discussions for a legislative end to this lawsuit. However, in order to find a real solution, we must bring all of the parties together including tribal leaders and individual money account holders. As promised, we are taking hearings out of Washington to the people most affected."
The Cobell case was filed in 1996 on behalf of 500,000 individual Indians throughout the country. It seeks an accounting of at least $13 billion in Indian funds.
