Cayuga tribes discuss land claims at forum in N.Y.
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

Representatives of three Cayuga tribes discussed their 64,000-acre land claim and other land issues at a forum in New York.

The Cayuga Nation of New York, the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma and the Thames Band from Canada won a court decision awarding them $247 million for the lost land. The tribes are appealing, seeing $1.6 billion. The state of New York and two counties are also appealing.

Since the decision, the Cayuga and Seneca-Cayuga tribes have repurchased land in their ancestral territory. Relying on other court decisions, the tribes believe the land is Indian Country, free form state and local jurisdiction.

The Cayuga Nation is opposing the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe's exercise of authority on the land, however. The dispute is in court.

At the forum, a representative of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin also spoke.
