Arts Column: Making history by tampering with it
Thursday, November 20, 2003

"One hundred years ago, photographer Edward S. Curtis set out on a mission to capture the vanishing'' American Indian with his camera.

Curtis mythologized his subjects, picturing them in their finest dress, having them strike dramatic poses, and placing them in vast Western scenery. He wanted to capture images of the Indians before they were influenced by white settlers and so he eliminated any modern items from his viewfinder. What was left was a romanticized vision of what he thought was the disappearing American Indian."
