Daschle meets with BIA nominee Dave Anderson
Friday, November 21, 2003
The following is a press release from Sen. Tom Daschle (D-S.D.). November 20, 2003.
Senator Tom Daschle recently met with Dave Anderson, President Bush's nominee to lead the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and reiterated his intent to support Anderson's nomination.
In his meeting with Anderson, Daschle underscored the need for comprehensive trust reform, adequate funding for budgets from the BIA, proper fiscal stewardship and strong management of the agency.
"Dave Anderson has an extraordinarily difficult task ahead of him, and I wish him every success at the BIA," said Daschle. "Our country has made significant promises to Native Americans, and I sincerely hope that under Mr. Anderson's leadership, the BIA will move closer to providing Indians with the resources and infrastructure they need and deserve."
Daschle has long supported comprehensive trust reform and urged Anderson to ensure that the more than 300,000 Indian account holders receive the assets to which they are rightfully entitled while continuing to maintain and improve other critical BIA programs.
"The government has never lived up to its trust responsibilities," Daschle added. "I look forward to working with Mr. Anderson and other interested parties to ensure that trust beneficiaries are treated with fairness and respect."
