Miwok Tribe donates $1.5M to Calif. university
Tuesday, December 9, 2003

The Coast Miwok Tribe of California on Monday donated $1.5 million to Sonoma State University to fund a faculty position in Native American studies.

The donation is on top of three gifts of $20,000 the tribe made to SSU and two other universities. Those gifts will create student scholarships.

The tribe, also known as the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, is currently trying to build a casino in the Bay Area. The tribe has been criticized for seeking to restore its land base, which was taken when the federal government terminated the tribe in the 1950s.
