Quapaw casino manager also partner in chat deal
Wednesday, December 17, 2003
The manager of the Quapaw Tribe's casino has entered into a deal to profit of the sale of chat from Quapaw lands, The Joplin Globe reports. Marc Dunn has an interest in 200 acres of land that will use be used to collect and process the mine waste, the paper said.
But the tribe's general council -- its governing body -- has ordered tribal leaders to get out of the arrangement. John Berrey, chairman of the business committee, told the paper that the committee has asked Dunn to buy out the tribe's investment in the deal "but he is still thinking about it."
Berrey also told the paper that Dunn's new, five-year management contract for the casino is on hold pending the results of an investigation by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC).
This summer, NIGC told Berrey to turn over documents related to the casino, saying it may be in violation of federal law. NIGC is concerned that Dunn is managing the casino without an approved contract.
