Editorial: Say no to tribal casino proposal
Monday, January 13, 2003

The Baton Rouge Advocate in an editorial says the Department of Interior should reject the latest casino proposal by the Jena Band of Choctaws of Louisiana.

The tribe is seeking land for a reservation and would like to open a casino. But the paper says the state is already "awash in casinos" and doesn't need any more.

"In principle, we think Indian casinos should pay the same tax every other casino pays," the paper writes. "But because of Indian sovereignty, they are exempt from taxation on these big money-making commercial enterprises. That is despite the fact that many Indian casinos are managed by corporate gaming companies anyway."
