Records set and met at Native Youth Olympics
Monday, April 28, 2003

The 2003 Native Youth Olympics were held in Anchorage, Alaska, last week.

David Thomas, a 16-year-old Inupiaq Eskimo, set the record for the Alaskan high kick. He kicked a ball suspended 7 feet 4 inches above the floor, beating the current record by one inch. Thomas is 5 feet 7 1/2 inches.

John Miller, 15, also made the record books for the one-foot high kick. He is only the third person in the world -- in both adult and youth competitions -- to reach 9 feet, 6 inches. Miller, who stands 5 feet 11 inches, is from the Eskimo village of Barrow.
