Appeals court rejects challenge to bison hazing

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday rejected an attempt to stop the hazing of bison that wander out of Yellowstone National Park.

A three-judge panel unanimously dismissed claims made by opponents of hazing. The court said federal agencies did not violate environmental laws.

Under a plan approved near the end of the Clinton administration, the state of Montana is allowed to haze and kill bison that wander out of the park for fear of transmitting brucellosis, a deadly disease, to cattle. Environmental groups and tribes oppose the practice.

The bison in Yellowstone descend from the last free-roaming herd in the nation.
