Mescalero Apache Nation votes out president

Voters of the Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico ousted incumbent President Mark Chino in a primary election on Tuesday.

Chino failed to get enough votes to stay in the race. Former president Sara Misquez had the most, with 260 votes, followed by Carleton Naiche-Palmer, a council member.

Chino previously defeated Misquez in a controversial election in 2004. He is the son of the late Wendell Chino, who led the tribe for 40 years.
