Hearing set on controversial urban casino

printer friendly
The California Senate Committee on Governmental Organization will hold a hearing tomorrow on a controversial Bay Area urban casino proposal.

The Lytton Band of Pomo Indians has 9 1/2 acres of trust in the city of San Pablo. The land was acquired through an act of Congress and houses a card club.

The tribe wants to convert the card club into a full-fledged Class III casino. But when Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) negotiated a compact for a large facility with up to 5,000 slot machines, area officials expressed outrage.

Schwarzenegger has said he is required to enter into a compact but the act of Congress only mandated the trust land acquisition. The tribe was previously landless.
