Governor files challenge to Narragansett casino bid

Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) asked the state Supreme Court on Monday to rule on the legality of the Narragansett Tribe's casino proposal.

Carcieri posed four questions about the constitutional amendment that would authorize the casino. In 2005, he filed a legal challenge that derailed the tribe's proposal.

Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the latest challenge was without merit. He said state voters need a chance to decide whether to allow the casino.

The tribe has partnered with Harrah's Entertainment to open a casino in the town of West Warwick. Critics are calling for the agreement to be made public.
